“The People’s Judge”

Judge Trudy, often referred to as the “People’s Judge,” is an active participant in her community. She is quite familiar with the problems associated with poverty, drugs, lack of opportunity, and hopelessness. As a role model for her community, Judge White brings unique life experiences to the bench.

Judge Trudy M. White is a native of Baton Rouge and a graduate of McKinley High School, Howard University, and the LSU Law Center. She is a graduate of Harvard University's J.F. Kennedy School of Government's Senior Executives in State and Local Government and Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management Women's Director Development Programs.

As a Judge for over 20 years, and a 19th Judicial District Court Judge since 2009, Judge Trudy actively presides over State civil and criminal cases. She served as the Reentry Court Judge for five years. Judge Trudy's signature judicial outreach program was an educational interactive program between students and female residents from the Louisiana Correctional Institution for Women that she did for fifteen years.

As researcher and scriptwriter, Judge Trudy was the impetus behind the production of a historical documentary that chronicled the plight of Negro boys who drowned in the 1940's because there were no public pools where they could swim. The documentary -- "Baton Rouge Troubled Waters: The Brooks Park Story" was produced by the Louisiana Public Broadcasting station and the EBRP School System, with the participation of the United Negro Recreational Association. The documentary first aired in February 2007 on television stations across the nation.

In 2008 Judge Trudy received the YWCA's "Speak Truth to Power" and "Racial Social Justice" awards. In 2006 the Louisiana State Bar Association selected Judge Trudy for its Crystal Gavel Award for her outstanding work and efforts in educating the public and students about legal matters. In 2020 she was recognized by the National Bar Association's Women Law Division as its only recipient of their "Excellence in the Judiciary Award". See the announcement.
